Le congiunzioni

Le congiunzioni collegano tra loro due elementi simili di una proposizione, oppure più proposizioni tra loro. Si possono distinguere in:

a) congiunzioni consistenti di un solo vocabolo, come: and, or, but, because, if, that;

b) congiunzioni composte o locuzioni congiuntive, formate da più vocaboli, come: as long as, as well as, the next time (that), in order that, so that.

Per quanto riguarda la loro funzione, si possono distinguere in:

a) coordinative o correlative, che collegano tra loro parti del discorso (sostantivi, aggettivi, verbi, pronomi, avverbi) o intere frasi, come:

I’ll have bread and butter.	Prenderò pane e burro.
That cake is nice and big.	Quella torta è bella grossa.
Go and see him.	Vai a trovarlo.
You or I.	Io o tu.
Neither here nor there.	Né qui né là.
He arrived early and then waited at the station.	Arrivò presto e poi attese alla stazione.

b) subordinative o subordinanti, che creano un rapporto di dipendenza tra due proposizioni, cioè introducono proposizioni subordinate, come:

I’d come if I could.	Verrei se potessi.
We know that he likes you.	Sappiamo che tu gli piaci.
Come as soon as you can.	Vieni non appena potrai.
They were so nasty that nobody could stand them.	Erano così spiacevoli che nessuno li poteva sopportare.
